Cuisine du Berry cookbook and local food from the Berry

Stay with us in the Berry and you will soon discover that this region is more than a beautiful place to explore. It is also a delight for anyone who loves good food. Here, simple flavours, local produce and recipes passed down through generations take centre stage. At the market, in a village café or at a local producer's farm, you can taste the pride people take in their region.

Local produce with character

One of the Berry's hidden treasures is the black truffle. This delicacy has grown in the limestone soils of the Champagne Berrichonne since the Middle Ages. It may be less famous than the truffles of the Périgord, but its flavour is every bit as refined.

Cheese lovers have plenty to discover too. Creamy Crottin de Chavignol, soft Chambérat cheese and the distinctive pyramid-shaped Pouligny-Saint-Pierre are all local specialities worth trying.

The Berry is also proud of its green lentils. Their mild, nutty flavour makes them a versatile ingredient, from fresh salads to comforting stews.

A glass of local wine

And, of course, a good glass of wine belongs at the table. Alongside the well-known wines of Sancerre, we are particularly fond of the wines from Châteaumeillant. The fresh Vin Gris is especially lovely on a sunny afternoon or as an aperitif. Wiebe would be delighted to tell you more about it another time.

Our favourite places

During your stay at Chambres d'hôtes La Joyeuse, we are happy to share the places we enjoy ourselves: lively markets, good places to eat and wineries where you are welcomed with genuine enthusiasm and craftsmanship. These small, local encounters are what make a holiday in the Berry so special.

Marjan also loves the region's food. Her cookbook Cuisine du Berry is often open in our kitchen. Filled with traditional recipes and stories, it brings the Berry's culinary heritage to life and inspires us to try new regional dishes.

Next time: into the kitchen

In a future story, we will take you into our kitchen and share some favourite recipes from Cuisine du Berry. You can get to know the flavours of the Berry at home — and perhaps come and taste them here for yourself one day.

We hope to welcome you soon. À bientôt et bon appétit!
