Bottles of Châteaumeillant wine at La Joyeuse

You do not have to travel far from La Joyeuse to discover a wine region. Châteaumeillant lies about 15 kilometres from our house: a small town in the Berry, surrounded by vineyards and with a long winemaking history. Since 2010, the area's red and rosé wines have held AOC status, a protected designation of origin with production rules.

When we moved here, we quickly discovered how important wine is to this region. Châteaumeillant has since become a little part of La Joyeuse too. Our five guest rooms have names that we also encounter in the local wine world. So you can come across the wine region not only on a day trip, but also during your stay with us.

Gamay, Pinot Noir and Vin Gris

Châteaumeillant is best known for the Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes. They produce the region's red wines: fruity, with aromas of ripe fruit and sometimes a light peppery note.

The wine that surprises many people, though, is Vin Gris. It is a pale rosé, traditionally made by pressing Gamay grapes straight away. Fresh and fruity, with hints of white fruit and peach, it makes a lovely aperitif on a warm day. You can learn more about the appellation and its grapes from the Centre-Loire wine organisation.

An afternoon or evening of wine with Wiebe

Wiebe is the one of us who enjoys learning about wine. He likes not just opening a bottle, but sharing the story behind it.

That is why we enjoy organising a relaxed evening at La Joyeuse. By reservation, Wiebe brings out several wines from the area and talks about the region, the history of Châteaumeillant and the grapes grown here.

We take our time to taste, talk and find out which wines you enjoy most. You do not need any specialist knowledge. This is not a formal wine lesson: we sit together around the table with a few lovely glasses of wine and something tasty to eat. I enjoy preparing the accompanying bites.

The Berry in your glass

That is what we love about local wine. You taste more than the wine itself; you get to know the place where it was made. The Berry finds its way into La Joyeuse in many forms: the vegetables I use, the dishes I cook and the wines Wiebe pours.

Perhaps the nicest way to discover a region is to travel around it, talk about it and, above all, taste it. Read more about dining at La Joyeuse. Want to combine a tasting with a stay? Explore our rooms.
